Aptoide launches its alternative iOS game store in the EU

Following the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple has been required to permit third-party app stores for iOS in Europe. In response, several developers have introduced alternative stores, such as AltStore and MacPaw’s Setapp (currently in closed beta). The newest player in the field is Aptoide, a well-established Android app store, which is now unveiling a game store in Europe.

The company has announced that its game store will be available for iOS users starting June 6.

Initially, Aptoide will launch the store with six titles, with plans to introduce more games in the future. While over 100 developers are preparing to release their games on the app store, the formal launch is delayed due to Apple's notarization process.

The launch titles comprise Word Jungle, a word puzzle; Condor — Leap of Faith, a jump-based platformer game; All-in-one Solitaire, a compilation of different Solitaire games; All-in-one Mahjong, a compilation of different Mahjong games; Charades — Guess the Word, another word puzzle game.

Currently, Word Jungle is the only game offering in-app purchases. Aptoide has a unique pricing model for developers, adjusting fees based on how users discover the app. The company charges a 20% fee for in-app purchases when users find the app through search or recommendations, but reduces the fee to 10% if users are acquired through paid advertisements or community channels. Developers can also direct users to their websites for transactions, with Aptoide taking a 10% fee.

The startup encountered challenges while applying to be recognized as an alternative app store by Apple. It noted that the tech giant's responsiveness was inconsistent.

TechCrunch conducted a brief test of the app store and found the installation process to be relatively simple. Users simply need to follow an invitation or access code link to download the app store, then allow the installation of an app store from an unknown source (Aptoide) in their device settings.

Post-launch, Aptoide plans to onboard 500 to 1,000 users from the waitlist daily to stay below the threshold of 1 million annual first installs and avoid the core technology fee of €0.50 per first install.

Having operated in the app store sector with an Android client since 2009, Aptoide saw nearly half a billion downloads on the Android platform last year. While experience in the Android app store realm may offer some advantages, navigating the iOS ecosystem with Apple's rules and restrictions presents new challenges. Furthermore, with other alternative stores vying for user interest in Europe, Aptoide will need to showcase unique games to attract users to its store.
