Spotify has introduced its AI DJ feature in a new language outside of English for the first time. The company announced the launch of a Spanish-speaking AI DJ on Tuesday, confirming earlier reports of the feature in development. The voice for the Spanish-language AI DJ is based on Olivia “Livi” Quiroz Roa, a senior music editor at Spotify in Mexico City, similar to the original AI DJ “X” which was based on Spotify employee Xavier “X” Jernigan.
The AI DJ, introduced last year, serves as a personalized audio guide that introduces music through a realistic voice. This feature is not only a way for Spotify to explore new AI technology but also to increase music consumption on its platform. Spotify's internal data shows that users of the AI DJ listen to a significant amount of music, with usage growing by more than 200% over the past year.
The AI DJ utilizes technologies from OpenAI and Sonantic, an AI voice platform acquired by Spotify in 2022. While DJ X was the original voice model for the AI, Livi was chosen through an extensive casting call for the latest AI DJ voice. Listeners found Livi's voice relatable and akin to receiving music recommendations from a friend. Users will have the option to choose between DJ X and “Livi” on the Spotify app.
Spotify acknowledged the growing demand for a Spanish-speaking AI DJ, particularly among its Spanish-speaking listeners who have shown increased interest on social media. The company plans to make 'Livi' available to Premium subscribers in markets where DJ X is already offered, as well as in various Latin American countries.
'Livi' is currently in beta testing phase and can be accessed by Spotify Premium subscribers through the Search tab on the app. Users can switch between English and Spanish languages for the AI DJ by selecting the option within the DJ card menu.
